Providing Self-directed Learning through Fun,Exploration & Unity : Rahul Ridhi,Gramya Manthan'13

“Love is the force that ignites the spirit and binds teams together.

Ridhi and Rahul stand testimony to the above lines. Completely in sync with each other’s thoughts and ideas, the two of them have treaded wonderfully on their journey towards the realization of their dreams. We were first introduced to them as they joined Gramya Manthan, a Youth Alliance initiative a year back. That rendezvous was the start of an extremely warm and affectionate relationship.

Ridhi and Rahul, both believers in democratic education have recently established Swatantra Talim, a Learning Centre in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Swatantra Talim focuses on freedom of education in every sense. It emphasizes on self-directed learning through three thoughts – Swa-Aangan, Swa-Khoj and Swa-Ekta. Swa- Aangan, currently is an after school learning center where learning is fun, where rules are made democratically with compassion and learning happens in a free environment with responsibility. Swa-Khoj is a place of exploration, pursuit of self-knowledge, discovery and understanding of life and the universe in multifarious aspects. They work with each child to develop a challenging and inspiring exploration journey through workshops in various government and private schools. Swa-Ekta is their unity in diversity program in which an environment is created where children form their own perspectives by interacting with the community at large.

As much as we are fond of them on a personal level, we are also filled with immense pride and respect witnessing the wonderful work they are doing. About their association with the Youth Alliance family they say, “We both think that Gramya-Manthan program of Youth Alliance was a great experience to see the dynamics of our rural India. The program provided a kick-start to our journey as it gave us a space to do a dip-stick of how things would work in a rural set-up. One of the most important thing that Gramya-Manthan gave us was relationships, that will always be there with us in our journey, providing strength and motivation at every step.”

The long-term vision of their organization is to co-create a space where children and youth can explore, engage and thereby empower themselves. It believes in democratic ways of education, where children and youth learn through free exploration, every-day life experiences, interactions and engage with their surroundings and problems in a holistic manner so as to empower themselves to deal with the changes in society and environment. With extreme faith in their abilities we are sure the two of them will go a long way in their pursuit. We wish them love and luck for the future.
